The Gulls, as they're affectionately known, have been around for an astounding 116 years but have never progressed into the higher tiers of English football, usually residing in the Conference Premier. The club's most notable achievements include a 3-3 draw against Tottenham Hotspur and an incredible run to the fourth round of the FA Cup in the 1954-55 season, beating Leeds United 4-0 only to miss out at home to Huddersfield where a staggering peak attendance of 21,908 was recorded at the Plainmoor ground. Torquay United's main rivals are Plymouth Argyle FC and Exeter City FC, both of which usually feature in Football League Two.
The Hendersons are a Scottish family most notable for the Henderson brothers, all three of whom have played for Scotland in the international rugby league arena. Despite all the Hendersons having been born in Torquay, neither Andrew nor Ian nor Kevin has played for Devon Sharks, Torquay's Rugby League team. With a number of Scotland caps between them, all three Hendersons featured in the Scotland squad for the 2008 Rugby League World.
